Because clients are demanding it! You’ve heard about legal project management, you’ve read about it, it’s here to stay – and it works. Legal project management starts and ends with client satisfaction. It’s a disciplined approach to plan, execute, and manage legal matters within the constraints of budget, time, and project goals, regardless of the size of the project. The most successful attorneys use legal project management to handle matters more effectively, efficiently, and profitably, resulting in greater client satisfaction. Legal project management also gives you a competitive advantage over lawyers who use traditional legal service delivery approaches.

What the LPM Process Looks Like…

  • Define the Scope of Work

What legal work is covered by the engagement – what is out of scope? What are the client’s business and legal problems? What does success mean to the client on this matter? What outcomes are possible and what outcomes are acceptable to the client? Do all team members understand the project scope to keep legal work on the critical path?

  • Identify Constraints and Contingencies

What are the budget, time, and staffing constraints? What are the risks involved and do you have a plan to deal with them if they occur?

  • Develop a Detailed Plan

Identify team members based on experience, expertise, and availability. List action steps with established deadlines. Develop a budget for each phase of the project. Establish a communications plan that keeps team members and client regularly informed of project status. Ensure that plan provides a change management process to adjust scope, budget, resources, and schedule if needed.

  • Conduct a Post-Project Review and Evaluation

At the end of the project, ask the client and team members – what did we do well? What could we improve upon? How could we do this differently next time and bring more value to the client? How satisfied is the client with our services?
